Crafty Women Celebrated in Abergavenny

Crafty Women

A group that was set up to address isolation and create community connections for women in Abergavenny has been celebrated.

Crafty Women is a joint initiative between Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA) and Arts Alive Wales. The aim of the group is to provide opportunities for women in the local area that experience difficulties accessing creative groups.

As part of the celebration event, Crafty Women members showcased their impressive collection of work including handmade cushions, blankets, bags and stuffed toys, which were available for sale to raise necessary funds to sustain the future of the group. As a community group they are also working on local projects including banners and a window display for the Wall to Wall Jazz Festival and contributing to the Aerial Project that will displayed in Neville Hall hospital to commemorate the First World War.

One member of the group commented on her experience and said; “Crafty Women has helped me to gain confidence in trying new things, I enjoy getting out of the house and have gained lots of new skills. Thank you Crafty Women.”

Originally set up in January 2013 to run for only 10 sessions, Crafty Women held a weekly group that is now on its way to becoming self-sufficient. The success of this group led to a steering committee coming together and enabled the introduction of an additional group to open up the project to others in the area. The groups meet every Tuesday and Friday during term time from 10am to 12pm at Wellfield Close Hall, Abergavenny.

Members of the original group developed their skills and confidence in helping others as they lent their support to help new members set up the new Crafty Women Group. The aim is for this group to again become self-sufficient making room for a new group to be established next year to open up the opportunities even further.

The project is funded through a grant raised by Health Control through The Health Lottery and managed by Arts Alive and MHA.  For more information about the project or if you are interested in joining Crafty Women, please contact Naomi Pearson on 01495 767187 or email her.
